Slashing Technique

After finding a video on YouTube based on a technique called slashing, I have decided to create a sample similar. You take a base fabric mine being white cotton and then taking a range of scrap fabrics. Pinning the sides and the sewing around the outside. After this sew straight down into rectangles: 

Then cutting up the middle of each strip. The next step for this technique will be to put it in a washing machine encouraging the fabrics to fray.

I like how this technique encourages the thread to fray and tangle together, the sample comes out different every time. I think this would be good to use on a skirt or the bottom of a dress to create a rough effect. I like how you are given the opportunity to experiment with different fabrics and materials. 

Weaving with photographs and Paper Manipulation

Inspired by Jennifer Goodwin's work: 

I have looked into weaving with paper. I created the second sample with a weaving board and brown wool and the first one I created a grid using sliced up photographs of flowers. 

A large proportion of Jennifer's work is paper based. Therefore, I have decided to look into the different ways in which I can manipulate images to make them appear more texturous. However, I have decided to not concentrate on using a lot of paper within my samples as I wanted to look at taking inspiration from my artist but not copying it completely. 

New Artist: Jennifer Goodwin

I am now looking into a new artist: Jennifer Goodwin. She concentrates on floral collages with bright colours, I like her style of work because it is bright and vibrant and I love her placements of where she puts her images. 

I will be looking at this image to create my own sample: 

I have decided to recreate this artists work by using brusho dyed fabric strips: I dyed them three different colours green,yellow and brown&black 

 Then using the embellisher I embellished them together, I will then be creating watercolor ring drawings of the red flowers to put over the top. 

I then decided to create a neater reverse appliqué version

Developing Fabric Flowers

After looking at my original fabric flowers 

I thought that they were too flat, I therefore decided to use the sewing machine to create more of a 3D effect. 

I have further developed my flower sample by adding homemade resin pieces to the centre. I think this gives them a quirky, unique feel. 

I have since taken my fabric flowers, created more and I have done this using the inspiration of Laura's textile piece 

Creating my own design: 

I layered up two pieces of fabric and cut into them, I think added these flowers on top. However, I think this looks quite plain and I have considered dying some parts of it and drawing on the stalks as well as adding more flowers to create a larger scene of flowers.

Scratching the Surface: My Photographs

I have looked into developing my own photographs by scratching the surface with a knife as well as adding bunches of tissue paper for texture. 

Laura Mysak: Mixed Media Flowers

I have taken one of Laura's images and recreated it on paper with ink and brusho dye. I used the bottom of a plastic cup for the main shape. I then went on and developed this sample by recreating them on fabric. I preferred how they looked on paper because the final outcome dryed really quickly. However, on fabric the ink and brusho dye bled and spread across the fabric making the flower look less structured.

Recreating an image with media

I have used a variety of media on top of the photograph as well as collaging and using the hot glue gun to create texture 

Laura Mysak: Samples

For my 3rd artist I have looked at Laura Mysak who focuses on floral. I have recreated flowers using mixed media: wax, plaster of paris, Ardex, ink, brusho dye and the hot glue gun...

 In my second sample I have created a collage of flowers using plaster of Paris wrapped into flower shapes and also twisted contrasting coloured fabrics together and embellished them onto the fabric.

Practicing Drawing - Natural Objects

Alongside my textiles work, I have an extra lesson to focus on my drawing skills and strengthening them. I started off roughly drawing the outline of a natural object and progressing to a full drawing. 

After this, I redrew it again and added shading, I then photo copied this and layed it out into a collage. I will then colour one with oil pastels and the other one will be sewn into with coloured thread. 

I will then be looking into ways in which I can transfer the photos onto fabric such as bleach drawing and sun light printing. 

Since then, I have image maked my design into fabric and used oil pastels to create the colours of the object.
